MEET OUR PASTOR

Rev. Amy E. DeLong

Amy was raised in the small town of Rhinelander, WI – and still today feels most at home in the woodlands of the north. With an English major and Sociology minor from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Amy went to United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities to get her Master of Arts in Theology. Never wanting to be pastor, she was surprised to find herself, two years later, at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary working on her Master of Divinity.

In between seminary stints, Amy joined the Disciple Bible Study class at her local UMC in River Falls. It was there she met and fell in love with Val who would become her life-partner. Bible Study is good for so many reasons.

Since her ordination in 1997, Amy has had lots of experiences in the United Methodist Church. She has served churches; she has served on various boards and agencies of the Wisconsin Annual Conference; she has served as Executive Director of Kairos CoMotion and its action arm, Love Prevails; she has co-authored a book entitled, The Loyal Opposition; she has survived a church trial for being gay and for doing a same-gender wedding. (If you haven’t heard of church trials, there really are such things … think Salem); she has travelled the country as a speaker and witness for the full inclusion of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender + people in the life and ministry of the Church; and, she has been a vocal and disruptive presence at United Methodist gatherings as she protests the church’s anti-Queer policies and practices.

When not making a ruckus Amy loves camping, photography, time with friends, and putting together 3-D mechanical wooden puzzles. Being an 8-year old boy at heart, Amy loves spending time with the young people in her life. In her down time, she can be found picking cat hair off her clothes and watching Brit-Coms.

Amy currently serves the River Falls United Methodist Church – the same church where she and her partner met during Bible Study. She adores the members of this church and their commitment to theological openness and social justice. This church has been a healing gift to Amy, reminding her of all the good faithful people can do in the world. She looks forward to seeing the new and creative ways our faith family will engage community and “reach out in love.”

Amy and Val have been together for more than 25 years. Val is a mental health therapist and together she and Amy own and operate a State Licensed Outpatient Mental Health Clinic with offices in Osceola and River Falls. They share their home with two cats Sweet Charlotte and Yuki.
